After my sister-in-law was diagnosed with breast cancer, I was at a loss as to how I could provide help and care for her. She lives several thousand miles from me, so taking her to appointments wasn’t really an option. After being given a knitted knocker at the hospital, she asked me to make her more, which led to the creation of the Val Breast Form pattern. After she had a double mastectomy, she was telling me that the mastectomy bras available to her through her insurance just weren’t that exciting as far as colors and styles. Here was my opportunity! I was already working on the Annika Wireless Bra and began doing research for how to add in a mastectomy pocket, which eventually I published as a pattern with both mastectomy pocket and flat cup options. Since then I have sold a surprising amount of both these patterns, which makes me sad because there is such demand for them. But I will continue to use my gifts as a designer and patternmaker to provide more bra options to help women going through breast cancer.

Introducing the Zenita Wireless Mastectomy Bra! My newest bra pattern is now available with a pocket option to hold a breast prosthesis, including my DIY option the Val Breast Form.

The mastectomy pocket opening has overlapped edges, similar to a pillow sham. Pocket extends from the bridge to the side seam to assure that all shapes of breast prostheses can be accommodated. Pocket shown here utilizes an athletic wicking fabric in the cup portion, and sheer cup lining in the cradle lining portion.

A princess seam back with lace is not only beautiful but also provides extra coverage and support. Pattern also includes a classic ballet back with an optional lace overlay.

All front style options are compatible with the mastectomy pocket. Don’t settle for plain and boring bras, make something beautiful for yourself or someone you love. You can find more information on the pattern listing.
Until next time, happy sewing!
